Canals, Lagoon & Moliceiros
If you are travelling to Aveiro, you should make sure you have the time to explore its beautiful lagoon and canals.
Aveiro is known as the Venice of Portugal due to its breath-taking maritime setting.
The canals weave through the city, emanating from Praça Humberto Delgado out to the Atlantic Ocean. They have been a hub for both industry and economy for centuries giving you a trip through history as you explore them.
Moliceiro is a boat that circulates in the Ria de Aveiro, lagoon region of the Vouga River. These boats were originally used to catch the moliço (seaweed), but nowadays they are more used for tourist purposes. It is one of the icons of Aveiro. Among the typical boats of the region, the moliceiro is considered the most elegant; despite the colorful and humorous decoration, it is a work boat for the collection of the moliço (seaweed), which was the main source of fertilizer in the agricultural lands of Aveiro.
