afpop is delighted to announce its upcoming seminar: Planning your future in Portugal under the theme: You’re never too young to plan for older age, taking place on Tuesday, 28 April at Boavista Resort – Lagos.
The event, conducted in English, is open to the public and aims to provide practical guidance for planning your future in Portugal.
Each speaker will share their expertise on key topics, including:
- Networking and Support – The British Consulate will guide participants on registering contacts and building support networks.
- Health and Insurance Planning – Health insurance plans tailored to expatriates.
- Funeral and Ceremonial Arrangements – Explaining available funeral plans and services.
- Legal Planning – Covering important legal topics, including wills and powers of attorney.
- Financial Planning – Advice on asset inventories, international coordination, and tax implications in Portugal.
- State Support Services – A social worker will outline options available through the Portuguese public system.
- Community Safety – The PSP will present the “Idosos em Segurança” programme, offering guidance on how seniors can stay safe and explaining how the police support vulnerable members of the community.

The Speakers

MEDAL Seguros
João is Chief Operating Officer at MEDAL, a family-owned brokerage founded in 1996. Having joined the business in 2010, he has played a central role in its growth and operational development, helping to strengthen MEDAL’s position as a leading insurance broker to expats in Portugal. João holds a degree in Business Management from the University of the Algarve and a Master’s in Business Management from ISCTE Executive Education. His presentation will focus on health insurance and the Portuguese healthcare system from a practical perspective for foreign residents.
ESJ Advogados
LLB from the Classical University of Lisbon; admitted to the Law Bar Association since 1986.
Practising as a solicitor since 1987; founding partner of Eduardo Serra Jorge & Associados – Sociedade de Advogados, with particular dedication to national and international companies, as well as cooperative and associative entities, in the fields of Civil, Commercial, Employment, Administrative and Tax Law.
Dr. Eduardo has delivered various training sessions for the Luso-Spanish Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Luso-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Global Estratégias, SL, Sinálise, NERA and ANJE.

Servilusa
47 years old, Postgraduate degree in Marketing and Sales Management from IPAM, Lisbon. In 1998, entered the funeral industry as a funeral service operator. In 1999, assumed the role of Specialized Technician responsible for the organization of funeral services, and in 2001, joined the International Department of Servilusa in the same role. Specialized in dealing with all the formalities in case of a Repatriation. In 2010 , began working as Commercial Coordinator in Lisbon until June 2025, after which assumed the role of Business Unit Manager for the South (Alentejo and Algarve) to the present.

PSP

The PSP will present information related to ‘Idosos em Segurança’, whose main objective is to detect cases of social, physical, or psychological vulnerability within the community. The PSP aims to explain how they can best support vulnerable elderly people and share simple tips on how older adults can remain safe.

Social Services
Paula Marques will present an overview of the social services support she provides related to specialised support to older patients during the transition period prior to hospital discharge. Her intervention focuses on ensuring continuity of care, assessing social and family support networks, identifying risks associated with returning home, and coordinating with community services to secure the appropriate post discharge arrangements. She works closely with multidisciplinary teams to promote a safe and dignified discharge process, particularly for elderly individuals with high levels of physical or cognitive dependency.
