There is good news finally, we hope. The new government has presented 41 measures to solve the issues in AIMA (Agência para a Integração, Migrações e Asilo) and immigration in general in Portugal. These measures have already been approved by the President and they include:
- Addressing the delay in implementation of the new border control systems (for example e-gates)
- Solving the problem of high levels of congestion and delays at border control experienced at Lisbon and Faro airports
- Reinforcing response and processing capacity at Portuguese Consular services (for example visa applications)
- Promote and manage immigrants’ access to the Portuguese National Health Service (SNS)
- Expansion of the service available for immigrants to request their NIF, NISS, Nº de Utente in person
- Improve the supply and frequency of Portuguese language teaching for foreigners
- Prioritise family reunification processes
- Restructuring AIMA's internal organisation, including reinforcing human and technological resources
- Transfer the responsibility for processing of Residency renewal requests in person from IRN to AIMA (non-EU citizens)
We don't know at the moment how this will affect Members' Residency renewal processes in the future or whether there will soon be appointments available again, however as always we will monitor developments and will inform Members accordingly.
