News from afpop

Monday 14th of July 2025

Included in this Member Briefing:

1. New AIMA Residency renewal portal
2. Social media

Good afternoon to you all and please understand that this News from afpop contains information for Members who have expired Residency documents and for Members whose Residency documents are due for renewal in JULY 2025 or in the next few months ahead. If that is not your case, you can ignore this mailing.

As this is just being launched, we have not been able to test the process to completion and we have no-one in our group who is in the situations referred to, so you will see below that we are inviting Members in certain circumstances to contact us with their experiences so we can fully understand the process.

New AIMA Residency renewal portal
The new Residency renewal portal has been launched. Below you will find further information. However, to begin with it is only for Residency documents that expired/expire in July 2025.

  • Currently, the portal is only available for Residency documents that expired or will expire in July 2025. Access to the renewal portal will soon be extended to documents that expire during the month of August. If the date is later, please wait for the portal to open the subsequent months to submit your application.

  • If your Residency document expired before the 30th of June 2025, and its validity is automatically extended until the 15th of October 2025 by Decree-Law No. 85-B/2025, you must wait for contact from AIMA to proceed with your renewal and you cannot use this renewal portal.

 Information from AIMA:

The Residency Permit Renewal Portal is available at the following link:

portal-renovacoes.aima.gov.pt.

“The application for Renewal of Residence Authorisation is made by registering on the Renewal Portal by the applicants themselves. They are going to receive a password in the e-mail address indicated. After successful registration, the applicant submits the application for renewal of Residence Permit, the system performs the necessary validations, and a document is issued for payment of the fees due. Payment can only be done 24 hours after the issue of that payment document. After payment, the renewal application receipt will be issued and the process of analysis by the services will begin, allowing the renewed Residence Permit to be issued.”

At present as we have not been able to test it or know anyone personally who is in this situation we are not able to say further about precisely how it works once you have logged in, how you get the payment document and the receipt for payment. So if any Members go through the process, we would be grateful to hear their experience and ask that they take note of any additional pages that they are directed to. Also, we would be grateful to know if anyone with an expired Residency document has been contacted by AIMA to start renewal already.

Furthermore, we are also not sure at present if EU citizens who have 6-digit Residency numbers (certificate or card) are able to use the renewal portal, as this is still a problem on the AIMA contact form as we have mentioned in our previous briefings. Again, we would be grateful to hear from a Member with EU nationality who manages to place the application for a renewal on the renewal portal.
